Heritage talk: Landing Echo – 200 years since the arrival of John Oxley

Wed 22 May · 10:30am–12:30pm

Our Heritage talk series connects you to our extraordinary collections by inviting speakers to share their expertise and perspectives on topics relating to Queensland history. Join us for our first Heritage talk of 2024, as we delve into the Colonial Secretary’s Correspondence to reflect on the 200th anniversary of John Oxley’s journey. In 1823 and 1824, Oxley explored the Moreton Bay area and environment to determine suitability for a secondary penal colony. Oxley’s recommendations set in motion a series of events with echoing consequences. Our speakers will explore these consequences through the establishment of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony, the open settlement of Brisbane Town, through to how we live today in Meanjin/Brisbane. Hear from renowned poet Samuel Wagan Watson, acclaimed historian Jennifer Harrison, and Curator, Truth Telling at State Library, Serene Fernando. Following the talk, enjoy a hands-on collection experience in the Marica Sourris and James C. Sourris AM White Gloves Room with a curated selection of original materials from State Library collections.
